Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Healthcare

Innovation and entrepreneurship are vital for pushing healthcare forwards to better lives and provide life saving treatments for more people. This workshop will start by introducing the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Healthcare as the basis for envisioning future change in healthcare. Then, the workshop will transition to methods for fostering innovation such as design thinking and lastly, provide attendees with steps and directions for starting and launching a venture. Case studies will be analyzed for applied learning and participants will have time to foster collaboration and brainstorm for real projects.

For anyone who’s new to machine learning. We will cover the types of problems that machine learning is well suited to solving, give a basic overview of some simple, useful methods and common problems with medical data. Together we will run through a worked example in the MIMIC dataset and see who can achieve the greatest accuracy. Ideal for anyone attending the hackathon who has a background in understanding health care or coding, but little experience with machine learning. Please come ready with a laptop and the ability to access Google Colaboratory (via Google Drive).

Learn how to manipulate complex datasets with ggplot2—a popular and aesthetically pleasing graphics framework in R. Topics covered include aesthetic mapping and scales, faceting, and themes. After a brief tutorial of basics, we’ll perform some data exploration and visualization of the MIMIC database. Some familiarity with R would be useful for this workshop, although it is not required. In this workshop you will learn how to create and control access for a medical database using google cloud services. You will also use a large-scale big data analytic tool to get access to the data by your programing language of choice, with a way to share a detailed notebook of the proposed work.

Introduction to Clinical Text Mining - In Spanish

Introduction to clinical text mining. Electronic health records contain an increasing amount of data, both structured and unstructured. Due to its complexity, unstructured text is often discarded in projects that attempt automatization in the healthcare system or a secondary use of this information. This workshop delivers an introduction and basic tools to process text within the clinical context, covering topics such as regular expressions, word clouds visualizations and term’s frequency. The workshop will use examples in Python.
